To love one’s neighbor is not always expressed in grand gestures. Often, it is revealed in quiet faithfulness - in listening without interruption, in holding a trembling hand, in refusing to judge a wounded soul. In these humble acts, the Gospel becomes flesh once again. As Christ Himself teaches us: “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35).

Today, this living Gospel is powerfully witnessed through the humanitarian ministry of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the United States of America, which continues to stand in solidarity with the suffering people of Ukraine. Though separated by an ocean, the Church remains close in heart, prayer, and sacrificial service.

In cities scarred by explosions and villages emptied by displacement, love takes tangible form. Nearly one hundred carefully prepared food and hygiene kits were recently distributed in Kharkiv. Aid continues daily to the Donetsk region, while ongoing humanitarian outreach extends across the Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv regions. Mothers with children, people with disabilities, the elderly, and large families reach out almost every day - each one bearing a story of loss, fear, and quiet endurance.

Yet what they receive is more than a package for survival. They receive dignity. They receive compassion. They receive a warm word that reminds them they have not been forgotten.

As Fr. Kostiantyn Kuznetsov, a priest of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, who ministers with the blessing of Metropolitan Serhii, reflects: “Every kind word, every gentle gesture, every smile becomes a breath of fresh air for a weary soul. We may not know what a person beside us is carrying, but we can become a small ray of God’s love for them.”

War strips life to its bare bones. Daily pain, relentless sirens, destroyed homes, and grief that never sleeps - this is the reality faced by millions. To survive means gathering oneself piece by piece each day, struggling not to lose faith, humanity, and hope for tomorrow.

In this wounded world, the Church becomes what the Fathers often called a hospital for souls.

To be a Christian, as Fr. Kostiantyn reminds us, is “to see the image of God in every person - not to despise, not to judge, not to teach arrogantly, but to love; to carry one’s cross with dignity and to help carry the cross of another.”

This vast humanitarian effort is prayerfully overseen by Archbishop Daniel, with the blessing of Metropolitan Antony, the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA.

Archbishop Daniel has repeatedly emphasized that Christian charity is not optional - it is the very measure of our faith: “We are not called merely to feel compassion, but to become compassion. When we feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and comfort the brokenhearted, we are standing before Christ Himself. Mercy offered in His Name sanctifies not only the one who receives, but also the one who gives.”

He further reminds the faithful that God measures not the size of our gift, but the love with which it is offered: “Do not measure your good deeds by quantity or scale. God sees the intention of the heart. Even the smallest gesture, done with love and faith, has the power to transform the world.”

During war, many lose not only their homes and livelihoods, but even their sense of meaning. The Christian response is clear: to be present, to provide food, clothing, shelter, medicine, and emotional support; to volunteer, to give, to pray, and to remain steadfast.

This mission continues - but it cannot continue without the faithful hearts and helping hands of those who support it.

We therefore call upon all people of goodwill: do not grow weary in doing good. Inspire even when you yourself are searching for light. Fill your time with mercy, your words with kindness, and your actions with love. One day, these moments given for others will become the greatest treasure you possess.

If even one suffering person can say, “Because of the Church, it became lighter for me,” then this ministry has fulfilled its holy purpose - to the glory of God, for the sake of His people, and for the healing of Ukraine.

Коли милосердя стає свідченням: любов у дії через океани

Любити ближнього - це не завжди великі й гучні вчинки. Часто ця любов виявляється у тихій вірності: у вмінні слухати, не перебиваючи, у тому, щоб тримати тремтячу руку, у відмові судити поранену душу. У цих смиренних жестах Євангеліє знову стає плоттю. Як навчає нас Сам Христос: «По тому пізнають усі, що ви Мої учні, якщо матимете любов між собою» (Ін. 13:35).

Сьогодні це живе Євангеліє переконливо засвідчується через гуманітарне служіння Української Православної Церкви США, яка продовжує стояти пліч-о-пліч зі стражденним народом України. Хоча нас розділяє океан, Церква залишається близькою серцем, молитвою та жертовним служінням.

У містах, понівечених вибухами, і селах, спустошених вимушеним переселенням, любов набуває конкретних форм. Нещодавно у Харкові було роздано майже сто ретельно підготовлених продуктових і гігієнічних наборів. Допомога щоденно надходить у Донецьку область, а постійна гуманітарна діяльність охоплює Дніпропетровську та Харківську області. Матусі з дітьми, люди з інвалідністю, літні люди та багатодітні родини звертаються по допомогу майже щодня - кожен із власною історією втрати, страху й тихої витривалості.

Та вони отримують не лише пакет для виживання. Вони отримують гідність. Вони отримують співчуття. Вони отримують тепле слово, яке нагадує їм, що про них не забули.

Як зазначає о. Костянтин Кузнєцов, священник Православної Церкви України, який служить з благословення митрополита Сергія: «Кожне добре слово, кожен лагідний жест, кожна усмішка стають ковтком свіжого повітря для втомленої душі. Ми можемо не знати, що несе в собі людина поруч, але можемо стати для неї маленьким променем Божої любові».

Війна оголює життя до самої основи. Щоденний біль, безупинні сирени, зруйновані домівки й смуток, що не знає сну, - такою є реальність мільйонів. Виживати означає щодня збирати себе по шматочках, борючись, щоб не втратити віру, людяність і надію на завтрашній день.

У цьому пораненому світі Церква стає тим, що святі Отці часто називали лікарнею для душ.

Бути християнином, як нагадує о. Костянтин, означає «бачити в кожній людині образ Божий - не зневажати, не судити, не повчати зверхньо, а любити; нести свій хрест із гідністю й допомагати нести хрест іншого».

Це масштабне гуманітарне служіння молитвенно опікується Архієпископом Даниїлом з благословення Блаженнішого Митрополита Антонія, Предстоятеля Української Православної Церкви США.

Архієпископ Даниїл неодноразово наголошував, що християнська милосердність - це не вибір, а міра нашої віри:«Ми покликані не лише співчувати, а стати самим співчуттям. Коли ми годуємо голодних, одягаємо нагих і втішаємо зранених серцем, ми стоїмо перед Самим Христом. Милосердя, принесене в Його Ім’я, освячує не лише того, хто його приймає, але й того, хто його чинить».

Він також нагадує вірним, що Бог вимірює не розмір нашої жертви, а любов, з якою вона принесена: «Не міряйте добрі справи кількістю чи масштабом. Бог бачить намір серця. Навіть найменший жест, звершений з любов’ю і вірою, має силу змінювати світ».

Під час війни багато людей втрачають не лише домівки й засоби до існування, а й сам сенс життя. Християнська відповідь є чіткою: бути поруч, допомагати їжею, одягом, житлом, ліками та емоційною підтримкою; волонтерити, жертвувати, молитися й залишатися вірними.

Ця місія триває - але вона не може тривати без вірних сердець і щедрих рук тих, хто її підтримує.

Тому ми звертаємося до всіх людей доброї волі: не втомлюйтеся чинити добро. Надихайте навіть тоді, коли самі шукаєте світла. Наповнюйте свій час милосердям, слова - добротою, а вчинки - любов’ю. Одного дня саме ці миті, віддані іншим, стануть вашим найбільшим скарбом.

І якщо хоча б одна стражденна людина скаже: «Завдяки Церкві мені стало легше»,  означає, що це служіння виконало своє святе призначення - на славу Божу, задля Його народу і для зцілення України.
