"For faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead." (James 2:17)

The war in Ukraine has long ceased to be merely a series of news reports or statistics of human loss. For millions of people, it has become a daily reality in which each new day is a struggle for life, dignity, and hope. It is for this reason that the ministry of mercy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, under the spiritual leadership of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, and through the direct coordination of Archbishop Daniel, President of the Consistory of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, remains a living witness that the Orthodox faith is not confined within the walls of the church but finds its true expression in love for one's neighbor.

While the Kharkiv region continues to endure oppressive heat, relentless air raid sirens, widespread destruction, and the constant threat of danger, clergy and volunteers persist in bringing people not only material assistance but also the hope that is born from the Gospel.

Together with the Very Rev. Fr. Kostyantyn Kuznetsov, his wife Natalia, and their son Dmytro, another humanitarian mission delivered much-needed aid to people who lost their homes as a result of the Russian invasion. Each food and hygiene package contained non-perishable food items, personal hygiene products, and other basic necessities.

For many recipients, these packages represent far more than food or household supplies. They are tangible signs that someone remembers them - that they have not been abandoned to face their suffering alone.

Special attention has been given to internally displaced persons who are living under extremely difficult circumstances. Although many families continue to work, their incomes barely cover rent and the most basic food expenses. Clothing, medications, and medical treatment have become unattainable luxuries for many.

The humanitarian team purchases essential supplies daily, assembles individual care packages, and delivers them personally or ships them to even the most remote areas of Ukraine. This ongoing ministry has been made possible through the sacrificial generosity of the clergy, parish communities, and faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA.

Another important aspect of this ministry remains support for Ukrainian servicemen and women.

At the request of military units serving on the Kramatorsk front, a modern portable power station was purchased and delivered. Military personnel also received cleaning supplies, household necessities, and cold beverages, recognizing that even such simple provisions help preserve their health, morale, and dignity while serving on the front lines.

Equally important is the Church's ministry to the elderly.

During another visit to a local hospice, volunteers delivered adult diapers, walkers, laundry supplies, personal hygiene products, food, yogurt, cookies, and other treats. Yet the greatest gifts they brought were warm conversation, heartfelt prayer, and the reassuring presence of compassionate people.

These visits serve as a powerful reminder that every human being hungers not only for bread but also for love, attention, and the affirmation of personal dignity.

At the same time, humanitarian assistance continues to be provided regularly to displaced families gathered at the Holy Trinity Parish of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine in Bykivnia, where people who have lost everything receive not only essential supplies but also the encouragement that helps them find the strength to begin life anew.

Addressing the clergy, faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, and all benefactors, Archbishop Daniel reflected: "The Orthodox faith cannot remain merely beautiful theology or solemn worship. The true Divine Liturgy continues when, after hearing the words, 'Let us depart in peace,' we go out into the world to become the hands of Christ for those who weep, hunger, suffer, and have lost hope. Every food package, every act of mercy, and every prayer is a continuation of the Gospel in today's world."

His Eminence further emphasized: "I offer my heartfelt gratitude to the clergy, faithful, and benefactors of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, whose generosity, prayers, and love bear daily witness that the Church is truly the living Body of Christ. When one person suffers, the whole Church suffers. When one person receives comfort, Christ Himself touches that soul through us."

The director of the humanitarian mission, Fr. Kostyantyn Kuznetsov, shared his personal reflections: "Yes, we become tired. There are moments of exhaustion and even burnout. Yet every time you see a mother's tears of gratitude, the smile of a child, or the folded hands of an elderly person lifted in prayer, the Lord grants you a second wind. In serving our neighbor, we ourselves experience spiritual healing."

Father Kostyantyn added: "Mercy is not a one-time charitable act. It is the way of life of every Orthodox Christian. As long as this war continues, our response must be the same—more love, greater sacrifice, and even deeper faith in God's presence amid human suffering."

Today, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA once again demonstrates to the world that Orthodoxy is not merely the preservation of an ancient tradition or the beauty of liturgical worship.

Orthodoxy is life in Christ. It is prayer that naturally becomes service. It is theology transformed into mercy. It is love taking visible form through care for those in need.

This is how the Apostles lived. This is how the Holy Fathers taught. This is how every Orthodox Christian is called to live. Saint John Chrysostom reminds us: "If you cannot find Christ in the beggar at the church door, you will not find Him in the Chalice."

Serving our neighbor is not an optional virtue reserved for a select few. It is the natural consequence of our Holy Baptism. We may speak eloquently about faith. We may possess deep theological knowledge. We may faithfully attend the Divine Services.

Yet Christ will ask us not only what we knew, but above all whether we fed the hungry, visited the sick, comforted the afflicted, and became light for those living in darkness.

For this reason, every Orthodox Christian is invited to ask:

• Does my faith transform the lives of others?
• Do my prayers bear the fruit of concrete acts of love?
• Can Christ touch those who suffer through me?
• Do I make time not only for myself but also for those who need my help?
• Is my parish a place where people truly encounter the living love of God?

For this is how the Church becomes authentic - not only when she gathers around the Holy Altar, but when, after the Divine Liturgy, she goes forth into the world to bring the hope that only Christ can give.

"Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." (Galatians 6:2)

May these apostolic words remain a guiding light for the clergy, monastics, faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, and all people of goodwill who, through their daily acts of mercy, bear witness that the love of God is stronger than war and that the light of Christ's Resurrection triumphs over even the deepest darkness.

Війна в Україні вже давно перестала бути лише зведенням новин чи статистикою людських втрат. Для мільйонів людей вона стала щоденною реальністю, в якій кожен новий день є боротьбою за життя, гідність і надію. Саме тому служіння милосердя Української Православної Церкви США під духовним проводом Високопреосвященного Митрополита Антонія, Предстоятеля Української Православної Церкви США, та за безпосередньої координації Архієпископа Даниїла, голови Консисторії УПЦ США, залишається живим свідченням того, що православна віра не обмежується стінами храму, а знаходить своє справжнє втілення у любові до ближнього.

У той час, коли Харківщина потерпає від виснажливої спеки, постійних повітряних тривог, руйнувань та щоденної небезпеки, духовенство і волонтери продовжують нести людям не лише матеріальну допомогу, але й надію, яка народжується з Євангелія.

Разом із протоієреєм Костянтином Кузнєцовим, його дружиною Наталією та сином Димитрієм було доставлено чергову гуманітарну допомогу людям, які втратили свої домівки внаслідок російської агресії. Кожен продуктово-гігієнічний набір містив продукти тривалого зберігання, засоби особистої гігієни та речі першої необхідності.

Для багатьох ці пакунки означають набагато більше, ніж їжу чи побутові речі. Вони стають знаком того, що про них пам'ятають, що вони не залишилися сам на сам зі своїм болем.

Особлива увага була приділена внутрішньо переміщеним особам, які сьогодні живуть у надзвичайно складних умовах. Багато родин працюють, однак їхніх доходів ледве вистачає на оплату житла та найнеобхідніших продуктів. Одяг, медикаменти чи лікування часто стають недосяжною розкішшю.

Команда гуманітарного служіння щоденно закуповує необхідні товари, формує індивідуальні набори та доставляє допомогу особисто або надсилає її поштовими перевізниками у найвіддаленіші куточки України. Це системне служіння стало можливим завдяки жертовності духовенства, парафій та вірних Української Православної Церкви США.

Окремим напрямком залишається підтримка українських військовослужбовців.

На прохання підрозділів, які виконують бойові завдання на Краматорському напрямку, було придбано сучасну мобільну зарядну станцію. Також військовим передано необхідні миючі засоби, побутову хімію та прохолодні напої, адже навіть такі прості речі допомагають підтримувати здоров'я, моральний дух та гідність захисників України.

Не менш важливим залишається служіння людям похилого віку.

Під час чергового відвідування місцевого хоспісу волонтери доставили підгузки для дорослих, ходунки, пральні засоби, засоби особистої гігієни, продукти харчування, йогурти, печиво та солодощі. Але найбільшим подарунком для літніх людей стали теплі слова, молитва та людська присутність.

Саме такі зустрічі ще раз нагадують, що людина потребує не лише хліба, але й любові, уваги та відчуття власної гідності.

Паралельно гуманітарна допомога регулярно надається переселенцям на території Свято-Троїцької громади Православної Церкви України у Биківні, де люди, які втратили все, отримують не лише необхідні речі, а й підтримку, що допомагає їм знаходити сили жити далі.

Звертаючись до духовенства, вірних Української Православної Церкви США та всіх благодійників, Архієпископ Даниїл наголошує: «Православна віра не може залишатися лише красивим богослов'ям чи урочистим богослужінням. Справжня Літургія продовжується тоді, коли після слова "З миром вийдімо" ми виходимо у світ, щоб стати руками Христовими для тих, хто плаче, голодує, страждає і втратив надію. Кожен продуктовий пакунок, кожен прояв милосердя, кожна молитва є продовженням Євангелія у сучасному світі».

Владика також підкреслив: «Я щиро дякую духовенству, парафіянам та добродіям Української Православної Церкви США, які своїми пожертвами, молитвами і любов'ю щоденно свідчать, що Церква є живим Тілом Христовим. Коли одна людина страждає - страждає вся Церква. Коли одна людина отримує підтримку — Христос торкається її через нас».

Керівник гуманітарної місії протоієрей Костянтин Кузнєцов поділився власними переживаннями: «Так, ми втомлюємося. Бувають моменти виснаження і навіть вигорання. Але щоразу, коли бачиш сльози вдячності матері, усмішку дитини або руки старенької людини, складені для молитви, Господь відкриває друге дихання. Допомагаючи ближньому, ми самі духовно зцілюємося».

Отець Костянтин додав: «Милосердя - це не разова акція. Це спосіб життя православного християнина. Поки триває війна, наша відповідь повинна бути одна - ще більше любові, ще більше жертовності і ще більше віри у Божу присутність серед людського болю».

Сьогодні Українська Православна Церква США вкотре показує всьому світові, що православ'я - це не лише збереження древньої традиції чи краса богослужіння.

Православ'я - це життя у Христі. Це молитва, яка переходить у служіння. Це богослов'я, яке стає милосердям. Це любов, яка набуває конкретної форми через допомогу нужденному.

Саме так жили апостоли. Саме так навчали святі отці. Саме так покликаний жити кожен православний християнин. Святитель Іоан Золотоустий говорив: «Якщо ти не можеш знайти Христа у бідному біля церковних дверей, не знайдеш Його і в Чаші.»

Служіння ближньому не є додатковою чеснотою для окремих людей. Це є прямим наслідком нашого Хрещення.Ми можемо довго говорити про віру. Можемо знати богослов'я. Можемо регулярно бути присутніми на богослужіннях.

Але Христос запитає нас не лише про те, що ми знали, а насамперед про те, чи нагодували голодного, чи відвідали хворого, чи підтримали пригніченого, чи стали світлом для того, хто жив у темряві.

Саме тому кожен православний християнин сьогодні покликаний запитати себе:

• Чи моя віра змінює життя інших людей?
• Чи мої молитви народжують конкретні справи любові?
• Чи через мене Христос може торкнутися тих, хто сьогодні плаче?
• Чи знаходжу я час не лише для себе, а й для тих, хто потребує підтримки?
• Чи моя парафія є місцем, де люди зустрічають живу любов Божу?

Бо саме так Церква стає справжньою. Не лише тоді, коли збирається навколо престолу Господнього. А тоді, коли після Літургії виходить у світ і приносить людям надію, яку може дати лише Христос.

«Носіть тягарі один одного, і так виконаєте закон Христів» (Гал. 6:2). Нехай ці апостольські слова залишаються дороговказом для духовенства, монашества, парафіян Української Православної Церкви США та всіх людей доброї волі, які своїм милосердям щодня свідчать, що любов Божа сильніша за війну, а світло Христового Воскресіння перемагає навіть найгустішу темряву.
