Archbishop Daniel Visits “Barvinok” Ukrainian School at Sts Peter and Paul UOC, Palos Park, IL

It was a tremendous honor for the students and staff of the “Barvinok” School of Ukrainian Studies to welcome His Eminence Archbishop Daniel. The school, located in the Chicago suburbs, opened its doors in September 2015, starting with just twelve students and four teachers. Since then, it has grown remarkably, now boasting 109 students and a dedicated team of ten teachers, led by director Pani-matka Olena Sendeha. The curriculum covers Ukrainian grammar, literature, culture, geography, history, and religion, offering students a rich education in their heritage.

Archbishop Daniel, with the assistance of Very Rev. Fr. Vasyl Sendeha (pastor of Sts Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Parish in Palos Park, IL), despite his demanding schedule, made time to visit each classroom, engaging personally with both students and teachers. His presence was a delightful surprise, especially for the youngest in preschool and the oldest high school students. Lively conversations unfolded as the Archbishop answered questions and listened attentively to students sharing their experiences at the school. Many expressed their pride in learning the Ukrainian language and voiced concerns about the ongoing situation in their ancestral homeland, Ukraine.

The visit was capped off with a group photo, as everyone joyfully shouted, “Christ is Risen! Glory to God! Glory to Ukraine!” It was a moment to cherish, capturing the excitement and gratitude felt by all.

During a brief luncheon, the teachers had the opportunity to hear from Archbishop Daniel about the vital work being carried out by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA. He spoke of the many humanitarian missions aiding war-torn Ukraine, including efforts to support wounded soldiers receiving treatment and rehabilitation in Europe and the United States. The conversation sparked many questions from the teachers, eager to learn more about the Church’s contributions.

Though his visit was short due to a packed schedule ministering to the faithful in Chicagoland, Archbishop Daniel expressed his gratitude for the warm hospitality. The school community hopes to welcome him again for the celebration of their 10th anniversary in 2025.
